Low-pressure systems over Western Europe and the western Mediterranean are increasingly determining the weather conditions and will cause changeable, repeatedly cloudy weather in the near future. Disturbances are being directed towards us from the southwest, causing the densest clouds and occasional snowfall, especially on the main Alpine ridge and south of it. To the north, there will probably be mostly light southerly foehn effects, so that hardly any significant precipitation will reach the northern edge of the Alps. However, these low-pressure troughs have an additional side effect. They will draw in cold air from the high-pressure system over Eastern Europe, which will push our temperatures down into the winter cold range for a sustained period.
